How Cleaning Out Your Closet, Will Clean Up Your Life
The expression, skeletons in your closet is exactly the truth. Some people hide their deepest darkest secrets and fears in their closets; whether it’s physical objects or emotional triggers, we all can relate to having a messy closet at some point of our lives. For me it was both, objects and past pains!
Messy and chaotic closets, usually reflects your life currently. Simply taking control over your clothes and stuff will remove stress and anxiety from your daily life and will welcome happiness back in it.
Last Friday night, I was having dinner at my cousin’s house and we had a fun casual dinner. It was great! I love spending time with my family like that!
When I got home I started putting away my laundry (I know Friday night doing laundry but hey, I had a busy week and I was just looking forward to some quiet time for myself, some good music and a good glass of wine. We all need to recharge in some way!)
Hanging up and putting away my clothes was automatic, a no-brainer. I hung up the last jacket and happened to look up in my closet.
I spotted my old scrapbooking stuff. Some finished books and some new and one that wasn’t finished.
I noticed I had two boxes up there as well, one full of random junk and the other full with personal letters from a past relationship.
Thinking about it now, it’s like over the years I had blinders on and for the first time I really saw everything right in front of me.
Maybe it was because subconsciously I was ready to deal with the remains of that heartbreak relationship or maybe it was the wine kicking in and I was okay pulling this stuff down.
That relationship didn’t end well but it did help shape me into the woman I am now; you can actually read my full story here for background.
It’s sorting time…
When all the boxes were down I started sorting through it and trashing a lot but also reading through those old letters. It became an emotional experience but one that was much needed!
Some things I kept but most I didn’t keep. I haven’t looked at this stuff in years and finally I was ready to get rid of it and move on. It was truly amazing!
I went through a roller coaster of emotions but it was well worth it. Tossing those things away I felt lighter. I felt the pressure off my shoulders.
Since I was feeling better and now more intrigued with what else is in my closet. I looked at my clothes, not the ones I just put away but you know the ones, towards the back, hidden behind the stuff you usually wear.
So guess what I found, clothes with tags still on them, never worn, dresses and blouses I haven’t seen in years and jeans that I can’t even fit into right now.
I just pulled those clothes out and on to my bed so I can really see what I don’t wear. But here’s the kicker we all do this, we walk to our closets and say “I don’t have anything to wear today.”
Turns out for me, I haven’t worn over half my clothes in the last two years. I had about 12 different items with the tags still on them. That’s insane!
Now that I am on a tight budget all I see is the money I have spent on them and how now I could really use the cash to pay off my auto loan.
Eventually I became excited; I was just becoming happier and happier with every item I was removing from that closet.
I felt the stress lift off my shoulders, I felt the emotions of the past disappear and I felt like I could see clearly. Might sound crazy but try it out for yourself, it will feel so good!
I separated everything into 3 piles, give away, sell and trash.
I was looking for the condition of the clothes. The ones with holes or stains or even the hems that are coming undone, I trashed those. The ones that were in good shape or at least decent, I gave away to GoodWill.
Finally, the ones I only worn once or brand new with tags I sold them on eBay and made around $500!
It took me several days to go through everything and some things I really had a hard time parting with. But it was definitely worth all the time, effort and emotions!
It’s your turn!
I challenge you right now, go to your closet and pull out the clothes, the shoes, the items you haven’t worn or touched in the last year, trust me you’ll be so surprised what you’re going to find!
Memories will start coming back to you and you’ll go “aww,” “oh yeah,” or “I got this for that, it was such a good time!” GREAT! I hope they bring good memories.
Now, ask yourself why you haven’t worn this in the last year?
Really sit and think about it.
Did you gain weight in the last year or couple of years, did you lose weight in the last year, do you have a different job now, where your wardrobe has changed, or did you have such a fun time in this dress that you just can’t part with it yet?
How many of them have tags on them? How many are just so old they are falling apart? How do you feel staring at your closet?
So many questions will come flowing out and that’s okay! Keep pushing through; it will be well worth it!
Overall, I ended that weekend lighter, breathing easier and holding my head up higher. I had made a huge accomplishment! Minimalizing my closet but also making $500 from stuff I haven’t worn. It’s incredible!
I promise if you try it, even if you just get rid of one thing, you will feel so much better!
