We’ve all been to those parties where there is a beautiful cake, but when you get a piece of the cake, it’s lopsided, the slice has messy edges, the filling is all over the place, or there’s simply not enough cake served to everyone.
In this post, you’ll learn how to complete the cake decorating process by cutting and serving your beautiful cakes.
Let’s Talk About Cake Serving Sizes
There is a party size and event size. Below I’ll explain to you what occasion needs which size. This is part of the planning process. In case you missed it or need a refresher, how Planning Cakes Ahead of Time is essential.
When making cakes, one of the first questions you should ask yourself and the customer ordering the cake – how many people would you like to serve?
This is a fundamental question as you need to know how many people will be eating and create the cake design around that number.
The next question is, what type of event will it be? A casual birthday party, banquet-style wedding, etc. All these planning details will determine how you will cut and serve the cake.
Party size (or called a layered cake) is three layers of cake with two layers of filling that’s cut into pieces that are 3-inch by 2-inches.
This size is great for birthday parties or intimate groups or family holidays.
Event size (or called sheet cake) is two layers (or one layer) of cake with one layer of filling that’s cut into 1 ½ -inch by 1 ½ -inch pieces.
It’s for serving many more people and getting the most out of the cake like weddings, banquets, or large gatherings.
I know it can seem like an unnecessary step that many people don’t think about, but making clean cake slices will complete the experience to the people enjoying your cake.
Here’s How to Get Clean & Beautiful Cake Slices
The key is using a hot knife when you cut the cake. The hot knife will cut through the cake layers like butter. Then it’s essential to wipe off the blade on a damp towel in between each slice.
When the cake has coconut or nuts baked inside, use a serrated knife to prevent ripping and tearing up the cake for a better presentation.
You’ll also see the three easy ways you can cut a cake no matter the occasion.
A big tip before starting, lightly mark the cake to indicate where to cut before slicing. It will give you a better estimation of servings.
Another tip is cutting larger round cakes and cutting a circle 2-3 inches in the center of the cake. Then cut the outside ring into rectangles and cut the center circle into wedges.
Since this is such an important piece to cake decorating, I have created a training guide so you will learn how to make perfect slices for any occasion. This guide has charts to show you exactly how many servings you can get per cake size whether it’s for round or square cakes. Click here to get this free Cake Cutting training.
